Obituary of Rosie L. Johnson

Rosie Lee Johnson passed away October 14, 2019 at Naomi Heights nursing home in Alexandria, Louisiana she was born April 1,1947 in Waterproof, Louisiana, the daughter of Edgar Johnson and Ida Mae Whitfield.

Rosie graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1965. She attended Southern University of New Orleans. She married her high school sweetheart, late ex-husband John Yancy Jr., and to this union, she had 2 daughters Yashena Yancy Gillard and Crystal Yancy Chopin. She worked at Tulane Lakeside Hospital of Metairie, Louisiana. for 25 years before retiring early after Hurricane Katrina.

Rosie loved going on trips, going to the casino, cooking and socializing with family and friends. Rosie loved entertaining and never met a stranger. She especially loved to spend time with her 4 grandsons. Her eyes weren’t big enough to see them. Whenever their parents told them no, they knew they would get a yes out of “Mawmaw”. She was know for her delicious caramel cake, whose recipe she passed to her daughters, but only Crystal could perfect it like she did.

In addition to her parents, Rosie is preceded in death by her brother Edgar “Butch” Johnson and stepfather Ernest Tappins. Survivors include her loving daughters Yashena Marie Gillard (Anthony) of Alexandria, LA., Crystal Yancy Chopin (Ivory), of Westwego, LA., 4 grandsons, Jayden Chopin, Anthony Gillard Jr., Asad Chopin, and Siraj Chopin, 1st cousin Jerry Green, 3 godchildren Andrew Byrd, Shana Porter Davenport, and Melissa Robinson Carmen, 4 sisters in law, Barbara Braxton, Mary Yancy, Joyce Randolph, and Gale Yancy.  A good friend since childhood, Mary Williams, and a host of nephew, nieces, cousins and friends.
